Captain Obvious SEO Engine

The SEO Engine works on your website. Google shows it where to look.

The Captain Obvious SEO Engine is the software behind Captain SEO. It runs inside your own website, checks it every day, and makes the SEO changes you approve. To see your site the way Google does, it connects to your own Google account: only for your website, only with your permission, and you can disconnect at any time.

What the SEO Engine does.

Every Captain SEO plan runs on it. This is the work it does for your site.

Watches your search results

Which searches bring people to your site, where your pages rank, and which pages Google has or has not indexed.

Makes the fixes you approve

Titles, descriptions, structured data, sitemaps and broken links are corrected inside your own website.

Keeps your listing in step

Your website and your Google Business Profile show the same name, address, phone number and hours.

Setup: Connect Google.

One step connects the engine to your Google account. This is exactly what happens.

  1. Choose Connect Google

In your Captain SEO settings, choose Connect Google. You are sent to Google to sign in.

  2. Sign in on Google's own page

You sign in with Google, not with us. Captain Obvious never sees or stores your Google password.

  3. Review the four permissions

Google lists what the engine is asking for: Search Console, Google Analytics (read-only), Google Business Profile and the Indexing API. Each one is explained below.

  4. Approve, and the engine starts

The engine works only on your own website and its listing. You can disconnect at any time in Captain SEO settings or in your Google account.

The four Google services it connects to, and why.

The engine asks for these four and nothing else, and uses each one only for your own website.

Search Console

Search performance, sitemap submission and indexing status for your own site. Needed so the engine can see which searches find you, submit your sitemap when it changes, and catch pages Google cannot index.

Google Analytics (read-only)

Traffic reports in your dashboard. Read-only: the engine can read your reports but cannot change your Analytics settings or data.

Google Business Profile

Keeps your website's name, address, phone and hours identical to Google, and gives you review insights. Review replies are posted only after you approve them.

Indexing API

Tells Google when your site publishes or removes a page, so new pages are found sooner and removed pages drop out of results.

Your Google data stays yours.

We use Google data only to show you reports and make the SEO changes you approve. We never sell it or use it for advertising, and you can disconnect at any time in Captain SEO settings or at myaccount.google.com/permissions.

The full details are in our Privacy Policy (Section 10, Google User Data) and our Terms of Service.
