About Captain Obvious

We don't sell websites. We run a platform.

Most web shops hand you a site and disappear. We run yours. Hosting, security, SEO, signage, automation, monitoring, support — one bill, one inbox, one Command Center. Twenty-two paying clients trust us with their entire online presence. We'd like to earn that trust from you.

Why this exists.

Founder note

Every small business I knew was getting fleeced.

$3,000 for a 5-page site that the agency "didn't have time" to update. $400/mo for SEO that was just a monthly PDF. $200 setup fees for adding an SSL certificate that takes 30 seconds. Hosting bills that doubled when the agency got bought. Every owner I talked to had the same story. So I built something different — a platform where the same team that builds the site keeps running it, where pricing is plain on the website, where the technology gets better every month instead of staying frozen at launch. The result is Captain Obvious.

— Joe, founder, Captain Obvious

The Brain.

The reason every Captain Obvious build is faster, cheaper, and better than the last.

What we built

1.7 million design and SEO patterns. Growing daily.

The Brain is a private database of every design pattern, SEO signal, content structure, and conversion element we've encountered across 22 active client sites, hundreds of competitor scrapes, and 113 industries. When we build a new site, we don't start from scratch. The Brain tells us what works in restaurants, what works in legal, what works in retail. When we audit a site, the Brain knows what "good" looks like in that industry — because it's seen 50 of them. The Brain doesn't replace human judgment. It makes human judgment dramatically faster.

356 tables. 1.7M patterns. 113 industries. The numbers grow every night.

Three things we believe.

Every product decision, every pricing decision, every architectural decision runs through these.

Plainly priced.

Every tier, every feature, every fee is on the website. No "contact us for enterprise pricing." No hidden hosting markups. No setup fees that materialize at signing. If the price isn't visible, the price isn't fair.

Built once. Runs forever.

We architect for 5 years, not 5 months. No hardcoded business strings, no copy-paste codebases, no shortcuts that become tech debt. Every site we ship runs on the same platform, gets the same security patches, the same monitoring, the same upgrades.

You own your platform.

If you leave us, you leave with your site, your data, your email, your domain. We don't hold any of it hostage. The relationship works because it's earned every month — not because exit costs are punishing.

AI Shield — Technical paper.

Why every Captain Obvious site blocks training-scale AI scrapers while remaining visible to citing engines. The dual strategy that protects content and surfaces it.

Technical paper

The asymmetry: train-time vs. citation-time AI traffic.

AI engines crawl the web for two reasons. (1) Training corpora — used to fit the model itself, no traffic returned to the source. (2) Retrieval-augmented generation — pulled live at query time, citations returned with the answer. Both crawlers identify themselves: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, CCBot (Common Crawl, used by OpenAI and Anthropic for training), Google-Extended (Gemini training, separate from Googlebot). Citation-time crawlers like ChatGPT-User and PerplexityBot ALSO fetch live for RAG. AI Shield's strategy: block train-time crawlers at the robots.txt and WAF level so your content can't be absorbed into model weights without consent — while leaving citation-time crawlers and Googlebot fully open and giving them rich Schema.org / JSON-LD signals to maximize the chance you're the answer they cite. The math: training crawlers return zero traffic. Citation crawlers can return a customer. The optimal strategy is binary: closed to one, wide open to the other. Implementation lives in each site's robots.txt + Apache rewrite rules + Cloudflare WAF custom rule set. Updated whenever a new AI agent appears in the user-agent landscape. Inspired by the structured-data and edge-security architecture we built behind ClaimArmorAI's risk-protection platform.

Meet Captain Obi.

Our AI assistant. Not a chatbot. Not a marketing widget.

On every Captain Obvious page

Obi answers questions a real human would answer.

Obi is connected to our internal systems — the Brain, your dashboard (if you're a client), our pricing rules, our service catalog, our docs, and our team's collective answers to every question we've ever been asked. When Obi doesn't know, Obi says so and routes to a human. Obi doesn't hallucinate prices. Obi doesn't promise SLAs we don't offer. Obi is a real channel into the team, available 24/7. We built Obi the same way we build everything else: privately, no third-party trackers, no chat history sold or fed back to training corpora.

Try Obi from the floating widget on every page, or from /contact.

Where this is going.

The next 24 months

A sellable SaaS platform that doesn't lose its soul.

The current state: 22 active clients, 113 industries, one platform. The destination: a multi-tenant SaaS where independent business owners and small agencies can self-serve onto the same platform that powers our managed clients — with the same Brain, the same AI Shield, the same Command Center. We're roughly 15% away on three modules (SEO Engine, AI Shield, Captain Obi Pro). We're not racing. We're building this so it lasts longer than us, and so the businesses on it never get the "we've been acquired" email that ruins everyone's tooling. If that sounds like the kind of platform you want to run your business on — talk to us.

— The Captain Obvious team

Twenty-two clients trust us with their entire online presence.

We'd like to earn that trust from you. Talk to Obi. Email the team. Either way works.
